A week can make a big difference..the hat goddesses, just in time, sent me some very happy customers this weekend at the Cobble Hill Sunday Market...I feel better now..
Isn't it ironic that you question yourself and your abilities when times are rough, you wonder whether or not to just give it all up because no one seems interested, then, suddenly you have a day full of praise and interest and presto! you are back!
It's too bad we can't accomplish this metamorphosis for ourselves, but we are social creatures, and a little appreciation goes a long way..
Here are some pictures from the Market...
Oh, dear..things have been disastrous on the Street Market front here..don't know why...and it isn't just me..all over our little Island tourists and locals alike seem disinterested, or don't even show up! What a change from 2 years ago...
I have to wonder if this is a general malaise, or if it is specific to our area..any of you out there sell regularly at Craft Markets or Farmer's Markets, and if so, how are things out in the rest of the world? Let me know...

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896690819778878972.post-43751857496031926122016-06-21T07:28:00.000-07:002016-06-21T07:28:06.064-07:00A New Market, A New Place to See and be Seen...Had my first visit to a new Farmer's Market here on the Island at Cobble Hill Aggie Hall..what a nice day it was..not too cold or too hot, beautifully green and such a pleasure to be set up in a grassy area under trees, instead of on concrete, the norm here...
Had a wonderful time...of course, it is very small right now, but considering it is a start-up and only a few of us were there selling our wares, had a successful day and will definitely go back..
Here are a few (bad) images from the day..unfortunately very cloudy and so the light wasn't perfect - I had to take them on the fly while also minding the store..
If you are in the area on a Sunday , stop by, 10 - 3..we'd love to see you!
What has been happening? Well, lots of moving around, trying out different markets, seeing what works and what doesn't..
I try to give every opportunity a fair shake, because you can never tell in advance what will be practical..although you can often tell that something won't work for you at all..here's a few tips..
Chances are, if the focus is strictly on food and fresh produce at a so-called Farmer's Market, you, as a crafter, are usually just filling a spot and helping to support the seasonal selling of farmers..that might be okay with you, you may do well in spite of that, depending on what you sell...but...don't assume that it will be a good fit. I find that there are few Markets where artisan work is appreciated or sells well..you have to try out different things. Because of this, I always recommend that your first foray into a Market should be as a drop in..a seasonal spot can be an expensive gamble, and if things don't work out, as a drop -in you have lost very little but one day vending fees and your time..whereas, if a market proves disastrous, there is no guarantee that you will be refunded your seasonal money (most markets won't refund...) and you can lose considerably, not just in fees but alternative markets might be full so that season of selling could be wasted..all these issues, and more, have happened to me..it is especially important, if you live in an area where holiday markets are popular, to get your application and fees in as soon as the sales are opened for vendors to apply..otherwise, you may lose out on a spot..
I know that most of this sounds somewhat negative, but believe me I am putting it on this blog for the best of reasons..so that you can profit from my experience if you are new to this world..
The outdoor venue, still going for one more week, is located downtown in a beautiful old brick building's patio..called Market Square, it also has shops and restaurants, and the Vintage Flea takes place on Sundays..
Here are some photos I took, not too great because of the high contrast of a shaded area and a bright
Just completed my last indoor holiday fair, now, two more outdoor markets before Christmas (weather permitting..)
It's been really cold everywhere, and here is no exception..my last outdoor market, two weekends ago, was -7 Celsius (yes, I am insane) and not many customers braved the cold to stop by, but I did okay and got some custom orders I would have missed otherwise..
My last indoor market was in a local boutique hotel, right on the ocean, with a big picture window behind me, and I amused myself between customers by watching some sea lions who were either lazing on the dock, or swimming languidly in the bay...brrr! A wonderful venue, a new one for me, and I'll definitely do it again..
All in all this year, I've done too much running around and too many overpriced venues that did not provide a decent return..my advice, if anyone is interested, is try everything once, but if it doesn't work out...? Stick with the tried and true, which of course, in my case, is the outdoor markets I attend..but be prepared, weather-wise..to be honest, I'd rather be cold than boiling hot in humidity (our summers here) so don't mind too much right now..
To all and sundry, have a wonderful holiday...and a hopefully peaceful New Year.
I wondered sometimes why there where so few crochet vids for left-handers like me, and then I found the Crochet Geek, on YouTube..I'll leave a link in case anyone's interested..
This wonderful woman not only has a huge variety of items for all you regular righties, she also has seen fit to notice us lefties, desolate, to fend for ourselves..
As some of you may know, or in case you don't, I'm self-taught, and never did learn to read a pattern..so I just kinda make it up as I go along...
Once in a while I'll watch a lefty's crochet vid, for what seems like hours, over and over again, to teach myself a specific stitch...and that is where I found a baby girl's dress...so cute! I had never taken on anything like it, so thought, just for the heck of it, to try...
And the results are in..I changed it up a little bit that's just how it is with me) and edged it with a contrasting yarn, made some booties for it, and of course, a matching hat...
Here are the results (not too shabby for a first timer...)

I'd like to thank the Crochet Geek for making me brave enough to at least attempt it, but, frankly, I will probably never 'go there' again...not happy with following patterns for hours on end..and that is what it took, close to three days, altogether...whew!
There's nothing more fun than a newly-minted idea hatched to the customer's satisfaction..and it keeps the creative juices flowing too
Sometimes I even get custom work from past custom work..I made a 'version' of a Dumbo the elephant hat for someone who loves the character, huge flappy ears and all..Then another woman saw it, went nuts and stalked me until I was at another market and she found me through email..
She wanted an identical hat, but I don't do that, so talked her into a different version of an elephant hat, in colours she loved..she was thrilled, and told me she is designing, in her head, her next custom hat..yes!

Of course, it's wonderful to be appreciated, and I have a new one just finished and waiting for pick-up..a woman wanted a newborn 'hat' or wig made of dreds as a gentle joke because the young parents, according to her, are sort of nouveau hippies..I convinced her that a hat with dreds was probably a better idea, and I thought a rainbow hat was the most 'hippy' way to go..I also embellished it with a peace symbol, for added credibility...here it is...

Summer's here, as this young lady, so daintily nipping at the apple tree leaves, is happy to tell you...
This is the view out my back door, didn't want to scare her so took it through the rather spotty windows...
First deer I've seen this year, very unusual for us, usually 3 or 4 nights a week they are in the back, munching away on all the nice grass and plants..this year, not so much..
The Farmer's Markets are also finally creaking to life, thank goodness...I was beginning to look for a part-time job because sales were so poor...attendance down, everybody supposedly poor, etc...
Its been really hot here, which some enjoy (not me!) but hope you all are having a great season, whatever you may be up to... Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896690819778878972.post-22081205294854928252013-06-20T11:19:00.000-07:002013-06-20T11:19:19.974-07:00Where Do You Get Your Ideas...Part 3As mentioned, here are some shots of the completed project...a faux straw crocheted cloche with a tiny brim and a 'colourful' assortment of pansies as a focal, with a bit of black satin ribbon around the base of the crown....
I am keeping this one for myself, as it took way too many hours to try and price it at this point, but I will probably add it to my Etsy store as a special order, if anyone wants to actually pay me for my time....
Two full days worth of work, around 16-20 hours I'd guess, and I am happy with the results, though not at all what I had in mind to start with...
But isn't that the way design often goes...
In my case, this time, yarn...as is evident in the pictures of the various skeins and little blurbs of colour I already crocheted in preparation for the pansies I'm making...pansies? Did she say pansies?
Whatever happened with the iris, the original object of her inspiration?
Don't know how everyone else's mind operates, but mine has a tendency to roam, quite a bit in fact, as I consider all the possibilities...and if you think about it, pansies have a similar sort of colour structure as irises...sort of....and wavy shaped petals...so somehow, my idea went from an iris to a bunch of pansies..not to say I won't try an iris, later, but the pansy presented so many difficulties, and it's a much simpler structure, that I felt it might be better to take baby steps on this one...at least for now...
So, here are my materials and colours:

And, in the next image, are the close-ups of my starting shapes...

Finally, after a couple of hours, I have finished three of them, with some embroidery involved, as you can see
in the last image, below...
Thought I'd include the tools I used as well..a needle threader is a fussy and annoying tool but absolutely critical when the yarn is fatter than the needle, and it almost always is...

These flowers took way too long, was thinking I would be making a good dozen of them, but it'll take much longer than I thought, so that is all for now...
When I've finished them, and the requisite leaves, I'll be back with the finished project (of course, a hat, what did you think...?)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896690819778878972.post-29396272464189882682013-05-27T19:55:00.000-07:002013-05-27T19:55:45.951-07:00Where Do You Get Your Ideas? This will be a couple of postings about inspiration, since I have been thinking often about the question in the title...the one I get asked, often more than once, at every market/craft fair/event that I participate in.... thought it might be interesting (at least to me) to follow through with the beginnings, middles and end results of inspiration...
I live on the first floor, sort of, not exactly a basement suite, but partially, I guess, of an old brick farmhouse, and my living room window faces the front yard..where there are various seasonal things growing that I see...right now it's beautiful purple iris..don't know why but they really take my breath away, so surreal/strange in shape and yet so old- fashioned-familiar...always been one of my favourites...I took a couple of photos in the rain this morning, through the window....I'm now thinking about a hat...and maybe a watercolour...but definitely a hat....
So whatever transpires in the next few days, I'll post what I've come up with and the steps to it....
I have switched to a drop-in situation at the Saturday Duncan Market, since the powers that be decided to ignore my requests for a shady spot and stick me in the most brutally hot area of the Market...a message that has definitely been received...so they lose all that seasonal money from me...oh well....
I will still be in a seasonal spot at the Chemainus Market on Wednesdays...
I am currently exploring other Markets in my area, as they are plentiful and seemingly welcoming to new vendors....
One of the issues with many Markets is controlling the numbers of certain items in the crafting category..such as jewelry. There are lots of people who wish to sell it, but no Market wants too much of anything...I understand this, yet, because I sell primarily seasonal creations like hats and scarves, I need to have an alternative to round out my sales for Spring to late Summer..and that, for me, has always been jewelry.
Unfortunately for me, many Market Boards won't let me sell it, so I am limited to the ones that will...
Tonight I am going to an adjudication for a Market in the Greater Victoria area..
(For those of you not Canadian, Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, a Province in Canada, and it's located on Vancouver Island where I live.)
I am confident of acceptance, but a bit worried about their attitude regarding jewelry..everyone wants me to sell my hats, but few want the jewelry sales that I depend on...Ironically, the busiest times for sales are the Summer months, when we get lots of tourist traffic...the time when hats don't sell as well for obvious reasons, and jewelry sales blossom...people are wearing less so have a place for jewelry to show, like bare arms, necks, ears when the hair is pulled back, etc....*sigh* It can be very frustrating, but that is a part of the Craft/Farmer's Market reality, so I have to adapt....
Wish me luck tonight...I have often read that setbacks (like the Duncan Market) should be viewed as opportunities for expansion and change in a positive way, so that is how I'm trying to approach this year's adventures in crafting..now if only gas were a whole bunch less expensive....

The weather seems to be changing rather rapidly here in Paradise...although it is, of course, still a rainforest, with the requisite almost constant drip drip drip of early Spring...
We are now 'applying' as we have to do every year, for our little spot of retail at the weekly Farmer's Market that I attend, sometimes haphazardly (because of the weather)...
This year, have to decide if I want a permanent spot by paying seasonally, or if I want to drop-in...
Last year I had a permanent spot, but it proved to be a bit of a disaster...the powers that be decided to emphasize another section of the Market, naturally, the one I wasn't in, and it cost us much of our foot traffic...
It's a very difficult thing to find the spot that works for you in a large Market, but very frustrating to be inadvertently sidelined, while paying the same amount as everyone else..this cost me last year, so trying to prevent a recurrence this time around by requesting a different location, although, technically, we are not allowed to do that. *Sigh* not sure what will happen, but stay tuned...
I have switched from selling only hats and scarves to fewer of those, while still emphasizing baby hats, and added jewelry, which I'll sell alongside my crocheted items until Fall is upon us...
Surprisingly, at least to me, still sell quite a few hats even in the hot hot heat of summer..I assume, to tourists, who know that when they need them, they won't be here...
I also have applied, as usual, for a weekly Wednesday Market in a nearby town famous for its murals, busloads of tourists there...
You need to figure out where (and when) your most successful Market is - what works for you.
Social media (can you say "Etsy") has never worked for me...I leave a few things there, mostly to have a 'website' to refer to when applying at one-time fairs and holiday craft markets, etc. but really, I rarely sell anything there..I tried ArtFire (don't ask) and Zibbet, too, which I like for the wonderful people who run it, but never had a single sale from there, so just letting my 'shop' lapse, and I'll stick with a much-reduced 'studio' on Etsy for practicality's sake...
Many of the other Bloggers I follow seem to do quite well online, don't know their secret, but for me, it's strictly face-to-face that works...so, since I actually enjoy retail (I hear the screams out there!) guess I will continue until I am too decrepit to put up a canopy or haul boxes, etc, in and out of my truck....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896690819778878972.post-48103799310562100962013-02-16T15:32:00.002-08:002013-02-16T15:35:52.409-08:00A Little Something for the Cause....just because Do those of you who are makers of things out in blogland ever donate one or more of your pieces to good causes?
I have been doing so for a long time, for fundraisers for politicians that I like, for the wives of authors who needed medical help they couldn't afford, for our local Arts Council, etc.
I think it's a great idea...so this week I donated a hat and some earrings to one of our local environmental protection groups, Cowichan Land Trust. They are having a fundraiser to raise funds and help protect the estuary in Cowichan Bay (you can Google it, it's a beautiful place just down the road from where I live).
I am mentioning this because sometimes we may not have the money to support the causes we believe in, but we can often find either the time to volunteer a few hours or to donate something to be auctioned or raffled off.

Here is the hat I donated...

Think about this for the future...I often feel a bit guilty that I can't afford to support all the programs and charities that I would like to but when I can give my time and materials I enjoy it immensely, and it opens up the world to you and your work...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-896690819778878972.post-70140942188546775582013-01-22T08:30:00.003-08:002013-01-22T11:14:15.762-08:00A First!
In her latest entry, Carol has resuscitated a past posting (referring to her own little antiques shop/booth) called "What Sells and What Doesn't," and thought it would be a great starting point for my first entry of January 2013...

Because I make what I sell, it seems like I'm working just as hard as when I worked full time at a regular job...but the money is certainly different. I often wonder if buyers assume that my work is a 'hobby' or that I really don't need the money..both assumptions are untrue, sort of..
If I had to depend solely on my crafting sales, I would be in trouble. I am single and self-supporting, so that puts me at a major disadvantage for being able to ride it out when sales aren't going well.
Therefore, try and stick to what I know will sell (or what I hope will sell!) all within the loose framework of desire...
What I mean by that is I refuse to start turning out an assembly line of the same old same old just because it will sell...I would get bored, hate myself, etc. I prefer to be inspired by my ideas..and I have way too many of them to keep up.
Still, I do want to sell what I make, so there is a constant discussion in my tiny brain about what to do, what to do? This quandary is thankfully relieved by those who approach me for custom work..which is of course my favourite...
I sell every Saturday at an outdoor farmer's market, and yes, even in the Winter..I live on the West Coast of Canada, so we are usually more temperate than the Prairies or the East., in late Spring and Summer, .I also sell at a weekly market (Wednesdays) in a nearby town called Chemainus, which has a brisk tourist trade, and is famous for its murals. Wish that we could sell there in the Fall and Winter too, since the tourists keep coming all year and I do well there, but the town's business community still feels as if we are 'stealing' business form them..not true, our market is part of the attraction of coming to Chemainus..nonetheless..these are the sorts of things that are constantly changing, so always expect the unexpected when you sell to the public in a publicly-controlled space...
As for the actual subject of all this, what sells and what doesn't, I can only say that it ebbs and flows like the tides...
Hats, right now, are in seeming decline, and I'm selling lots of scarves..and fingerless gloves are finally starting to sell for some reason, after being a waste of time for so long...used to sell booties, too, but they aren't working for me at all since last summer, and kid's hats always seem to attract buyers...the reason, I'm fairly certain, being because they are unique.
Price point is important, and because I spend lots of time on my stuff, and use the best materials I can, I charge what seems to me a moderate amount..but many find my stuff expensive. As most sellers of just about anything know, if you can keep your price point at or near $20 or less, you will sell more..but I really can't do that, so have accepted that the chances of people lining up to pay for my work are gonna be few and far between. You, as a creator and seller, have to decide what you need for yourself to keep going...
I truly believe that what sells is what you loved making..maybe not the minute you put it out on the table, but if you are happy with it, it will find a home.
I've come so close at times to taking certain hats and putting them in the bin (for women's fund raising) that I keep , but the minute I'm convinced that a hat is unsaleable, sure enough, that is when it sells. so if you are interested in instant gratification, one of a kind creations may not be the way to go for you.
If you can find a tourist hub, that will probably work for you..I only sell my handmade jewelry in the Summer, but have been selling so many hats in those warm months that I'm starting to believe that I should add jewelry to the mix in Winter, too...who knows?
Part of the job is constantly editing what you have, and keeping an eye out for what is happening with your work on a seasonal basis..
I also do seasonal craft fairs (indoors) and I'm finding that they are not worth the much higher costs, at least not last season, but then, the economy may or may not have something to do with that, as all of last year was down from the year before..
If you can, keep records of sales that you can refer back to..it's astounding how much information these simple records really can provide.
Whew, this is really longer than I had planned...I think that to sum it all up, what sells and what doesn't (for me) is more about what you love doing and the patience and knowledge to offer only the best, because your best is the only thing worth doing.
Saturday, December 22nd was our last day this year at my weekly craft market..and of course, for the first two hours it poured..so very little in the way of potential customers strolling through the market..cold, too, so me and everything I owned was soaked, in no time, despite the tent and some tarps for walls I threw up, in a hurry...
The rain stopped around noon, and then at one we got a few customers..very few, because we have to stop at two...*sigh*
Still, I did okay with the hour I had, and one of the things that happened was a big burly young guy came to my 'booth' and asked for a Viking helmet..I was really happy to do it, I'd actually been thinking about a child's version for awhile..but this guy was about 6'2", so, measurements taken, I started it that night, and today (Christmas Eve afternoon) put the finishing touches on it (I think)...
I want to tart it up a bit more, but I think he wouldn't like that..he was pretty specific about colours..what do you think of the finished product?
He wanted the back to look like chaine maille, so this was as close as I could get without making it too delicate...
He didn't want the horns too big, so...and nothing decorative, although I could have had a great time designing runes, etc. if I 'd been given carte blanche..actually the big discs in the front and the "nails" in the back are my idea, hope that is okay with him...
It's an odd sort of feeling, that first fall of snow, especially when Winter seemed as if it would never come..a sweater was enough
The big warm coats were out and hung and ready, but no need...until yesterday...
Here's the front and back yard...
I put up the brand new artificial ( :-\ ) tree..doesn't look too bad, but do miss that fragrant wafting of pine throughout the house.. as a renter with a newish carpet, I have no choice...*sigh*
A rather touching arrest was made here in Canada...the police found the lair of the
"Great Maple Syrup Reserve" thieves...oooohhhhh...this is front page news in the media, and actually, I am ecstatic that this is the sort of thing that makes headlines here....
Happy Holidays to everyone!
I live in the back of beyond, have to drive many kilometers to buy any sort of yarn and what I can get isn't very exciting...I am also allergic, heavily, to sheep's wool, so that cuts right down on what I can use, as well. Buying online has really helped me..
I often to try to blend different yarns, sometimes three at a time, to achieve looks I can't find readily available.
I have a leopard hat that was created trying to blend different colours of yarn to look as though it were a leopard's fur...
But now that I have this safari yarn to work with, I'm in crochet heaven.. what I've done, so far..
